The Truth About Masturbation

 

Question:   Salam. I have read conflicting views on Islam On-Line about masturbation. I am an un-married female in my early thirties, and I masturbate. I feel an urge to masturbate and achieve the release that comes with masturbation. At certain times the urge is stronger than my will power. I have read that it is normal, and it’s a normal bodily need. In Islam it does not seem to be clear if it is makruh (allowed), haram (forbidden) or halal (accepted). Can you guide me please, to some text or link that sheds more light? Also is it haram to use objects while masturbating? Is it haram to read something of a sexual nature when masturbating?

 

  

Answer:   In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May He bestow His peace and blessings on His messenger, Muhammad, his family, Companions, and all of those who follow them sincerely.

As salamu ‘alaykum,

For the answer to this question, I will defer to Shaykh Faraz Rabbani, who writes:

“Masturbation is sinful, being prohibitively disliked, and having many personal and societal ill-effects that are known and recognized in sane traditional societies and by balanced people the world over. The early Muslims used to say, “The one who weds his hand is accursed.” (Fath al-Qadir)

 

It is only allowed in the very rare situation where if the person did not do this, they would commit zina (i.e. unlawful sexual intercourse), because of their uncontrollable desire, on condition that they are unable to marry and have taken all reasonable means to lessen their passion (such as fasting, lowering their gaze, avoiding meat and dairy products, avoiding those things that stir their desires, such as bad company, spending unnecessary time outdoors, especially in public places such as shopping malls where there is fitna http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitna, avoiding watching TV and surfing the Internet, etc).

Even in such cases, it could only be done to lessen sexual desire, not for sexual gratification. Otherwise, it would remain sinful. These conditions are extremely rare.

In a very lengthy publication from Madrasah Arabia Islamia (South Africa), the scholars wrote:

…that masturbation is haram. This is the ruling of the 4 schools of thought viz. Malikiyah, Shafi’eyah and Hanafiyah and one riwayah (narration) from Imam Ahmed. They have drawn their conclusions from the following proofs:- Proofs from the Qur`an Allah Ta’ala says:

“And those who guard their private parts save from their wives and those (slave-girls) which their right-hands own – so there is no blame upon them. Then whoever seeks beyond that (which is lawful), they are the transgressors.” (Al Mu’minun 23: 5 – 6) The intended meaning is clear. Allah Ta’ala has praised the believers for guarding their private parts from that which He has made forbidden upon them. Allah has permitted them to approach their wives and slave-girls. Thereafter, these Words of Allah Ta’ala follow:- Whoever seeks beyond that which is lawful are oppressors who overstep from halal (permitted) towards haram (prohibited). Hafiz Ibne Katheer Rahmatullah alaihi writes: “Imaam Shaafie Rahmatullah alaihi and those who have agreed with him have concluded that masturbation is haram from this ayah.” He says: “Masturbation is excluded from these two types which Allah has made halaal, viz. wives and slave-girls.”

 

Similarly, these Fuqahaa (Jurists) have drawn their conclusion from the following:

“And those who do not find the means to marry should remain chaste until Allah gives them resources by His Grace.” (Al Mu’minun 23: 32)

 

This ayah shows masturbation to be haram because of two reasons: Firstly: In this ayah Allah Ta’ala has given the command of chastity and, according to the principles of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), a command (an imperative) denotes wujub (incumbency, obligation). Hence to remain chaste is wajib (obligatory) and wherever chastity is wajib it becomes wajib to refrain from that which is contrary to it, for example, adultery, fornication, and sodomy. This is due to the fact that obligatory chastity will not materialize except by complete refrainment from all that which is contrary to chastity.

 

Secondly, In this aayah Allah Ta’ala has made chastity obligatory on those who are unable to execute the command of nikah. Here Allah Ta’ala has not determined any connection or link between marriage and chastity. Hence, this demands that masturbation should be haram. And if assuming, it was permissible, then Allah Ta’ala would have mentioned it at this point because this was the place of its explanation. The silence maintained by Allah Ta’ala with regards to it at a place which requires its explanation, denotes that masturbation is haram. Imaam Qurtubi Rahmatullah alaihi has written in the tafsir (detailed explanation)of this ayah: “And when Allah Ta’ala has not determined any order between nikah and chastity, then this shows that besides these two, everything else is haram. However, this hurmat (unlawfulness) does not include slave-girls because another command of the Qur`an makes them mubah (permissible), viz. “That which the right-hands earn (i.e. slave girls).” Hence in this matter an addition of slave-girl has come. Masturbation, however still remains haram.”

“Those who seek beyond this (i.e wives and slave girls] are transgressors.” (Surah Ma’aarij : Verse 31) Under the tafseer of this aayah, Qadhi Thanaullah Paani Patti writes: “Imaam Baghawi has deduced from this aayah that masturbation is haram.

 

Proofs from the Hadith

1.   Similarly, the Fuqahaa have drawn their conclusion from an ahadith reported by Abdullah bin Mas’ud Radiallahu anhu in Bukhari and Muslim. He says that Rasulullah (SAW) said: “O group of youth! Whoever from amongst you can marry should do so because it keeps the gaze low and it protects the private parts. And he who cannot marry should make it compulsory upon himself to fast because it breaks lust.” (Bukhari : vol.6, pg.117 ; Muslim: vol.10, pg.172)

2.   Nabi (SAW) has directed the person who is incapable of bearing the burden of nikah towards saum (fasting). If assuming, masturbation was permissible Rasulullah (SAW) would have mentioned it at this point. Hadhrat Anas (RA) narrates that Rasulullah (SAW) said:

 

“The person who performs nikaah with his hands (i.e. he masturbates) is cursed.” (Tasfseer Mazhari: vol.12, pg.94)

 

Sayings of our Pious Predecessors with Regard to Masturbation Sa’eed bin Jubair Radiallahu anhu says: “Allah Ta’aala will inflict a punishment on a group of people because they played with their private parts.” Attaa Rahmatullah alaihi says: “Some people will be resurrected in such a condition that their hands will be pregnant, I think they are those who masturbate.”

 

The Harm of Masturbation

Every harm is the result of sins. Hence, the harms of masturbation proves that it is a sin. Why should it not be so when sins are the root of misfortune and the key to all vices. Ibne Qayyim (RA) says:

“The reason for every loss, misfortune and evil in this world and the hereafter is sin and opposing the Laws and Commands of Allah Ta’aala. Moreover, sin destroys bounties and blessings as fire burns wood. It is possible to divide the harms of this vile act as follows: Shar’i (Religious) Harms The Shar’ee harms are many. Some of them are as follows: a decrease in taufIq (success granted by Allah Ta’ala); corrupt ideas; hard-heardtedness, an aversion towards people, cheerlessness in the heart and to be deprived of knowledge. The greatest spiritual harm caused by this evil act is the inability to remain steadfast on Deen. As long as a person is entangled in this evil habit, shaytaan will gradually remove him from his friends until he dislikes their company. Thereafter, shaytan will draw him into the mud of desires until he is deprived altogether from remaining steadfast on Deen. How many youth have been deprived of Tahajjud, fasting, recitation of the Qur`an, acquiring knowledge, associating with friends, etc. because of the commission of this evil. A person who commits this sin becomes weak in front of shaytan and his nafs-e-amarah (lowly-self) instructs him to do evil. Hence, he will not have the ability to oppose his nafs in order to carry out the Commands of Allah Ta’ala. Hasan Basri Rahmatullah alaihi has said: “A person deprives himself of performing Tahajjud by committing sins.” Moreover, masturbation causes the bladder to become weak. Consequently, involuntary urinal and seminal discharges occur from the private parts. This causes complications in wudhu(ritual ablutions), salah (prayer)  and cleanliness of the clothes.

 

Physical Harms

Undoubtedly, masturbation causes physical harm – although some have exaggerated its harms – nevertheless, medical science has proven that masturbation is a cause of a number of diseases. Amongst them are: It weakens the sexual organs and creates partial looseness in it. It weakens the nerves generally – a result of the exertion caused by this action. It affects the growth of the limbs especially the outer part of the urethra (duct through which urine is discharged from the bladder and the testicles). Hence it does not reach the limit of it’s normal growth. It creates seminal (spermatic) inflammation in the testicles which causes quick ejaculation of sperm. It causes pain in the vertebra column, the spinal column from which semen is ejaculated. This pain creates crookedness and twisting in the back. It causes some limbs like the legs to shake and shiver. It creates weakness in the cerebral glands of the brain which in turn weakens the power of perception and reason. Similarly, it leads to the weakness of memory. It weakens the eye-sight and reduces it’s normal limit of vision. It causes a person to become old before time. It weakens the very delicate and fine nerves and veins of the sexual organs resulting in sexual impotency. It causes an excessive loss of sperm by way of nocturnal emission (wet dreams). It decreases the natural resistance of the body. It causes harm to the four principal organs in the body viz. the heart, brain, liver and stomach. It decreases the natural animal heat in the body, heat which strengthens the soul and body. It causes an excessive loss of blood. Remember it takes 80 drops of blood to produce one drop of sperm. It weakens the bladder.

 

Psychological and Social Harms

The psychologists say:

“Here the awareness of a misdeed and the feeling of a sin occurs to those youth who practice this vile act in such a way that within themselves there is struggle between the desire to practice this vile act and the remorseful feeling of a sin.” Excessive practice of this vile act leads to cowardice, an increase in nervous agitation, no confidence in oneself, overwhelming disgrace, a decrease in the urge to study and desire towards isolation and introversion. Similarly, excessive practice of this evil act leads towards it’s addiction and attachment. Instead of practising it to rid oneself of an irresistible desire or to unleash a violent eruption of desire within oneself a person does it as a habit to attain and satisfy his carnal appetite and desire. Ibn Qayyim Rahmatullah alaihi has said: “Many sinners sin without deriving any pleasure from it and without any urge to do it except that they experience pain in quitting it.”

 

The Treatment

In fact, many people are well aware of Islam’s ruling with regard to masturbation and they are convinced of it’s hurmat (unlawfulness) and the resulting harm which is, of course, the first step in it’s treatment. However, there exists a deficiency in understanding the way to treat this chronic disease, the way to release oneself from the captivity of this defiant desire and the knowledge of the means which will help in subjugating the nafs and carnal appetite in order to free oneself from this bad habit. In addition, there also exists a lack of those words which will breathe into a person the spirit of determination, the power of intention and the revival of the sweetness of Iman and the nur of yaqeen (conviction) in the heart. This is most needed by those involved in this bad habit. Hence, it is necessary to give importance to this topic. It is hoped that Allah Azza wa Jalla will grant benefit by some of the treatments mentioned hereunder especially from that which has been taken from His Words, the words of His Rasulullah (SAW) and the words of the ‘Ulama.

 

Lowering the Gaze

The temptation to look at that which Allah Ta’ala has forbidden is the root of all evil desires. Ibne Qayyim (RA) writes:

“The gaze is the prowler and the messenger of desires. It’s protection is, in reality, the protection of the private-parts. The person who does not control his gaze throws himself into the places of destruction. Allah Ta’ala has made the eyes the mirror of the heart”.

 

e. To Develop a Firm Will / Determination

Only those people whose intentions and firm will has weakened have become the slaves of their desires. Hence, they are incapable of controlling their desires and opposing their passions. How many people are there who know that this affair is forbidden and that this matter is a sin yet they are too weak to abstain from it. For example, look at those who smoke cigarettes. In reality, we find most of them knowing the harms of smoking. Despite this if you address any smoker and remind him of its harms he will reply to you that he knows all this very well and desires to free himself of this “killer friend” but yet he is unable to do so. Why? Because he does not possess a firm intention by means of which he will be able to abandon this bad habit. For this reason if a person reads all the books on bad habits and comes to know of all the means which will free him from these bad habits but he does not possess a strong intention nor a firm will then he will not progress a step forward. Therefore, it is necessary upon all of us to make an effort to develop our intentions, strengthen our resolutions and build our minds and souls by observing the following points: To strive to acquire good character. Good character like knowledge, tolerance, patience are such that it is within a person’s scope to acquire. Nabi (SAW) has said: “The person who seeks chastity, Allah Ta’ala keeps him chaste. The person who seeks independence, Allah Ta’ala makes him independent and the person who is patient Allah Ta’ala grants him patience.” When a servant burdens himself with a firm intention and he strives to acquire it, it becomes his nature and character. Allah Ta’ala says:

“And those who strive in Our Way We will definitely guide them to Our Paths.” To inculcate good character gradually. Good character is not acquired all at once or by a little effort. To acquire good character it is necessary for a person to practice upon it gradually until it becomes his nature which he can do without any strain or inconvenience. A person should realize the Greatness, Loftiness, Oneness and Independence of Allah Ta’ala. He should not rely on his own strength and power. He should rely only on Allah Ta’ala. Allah Ta’ala says: “Then when you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allah. And Allah Ta’ala loves those who put their trust (in Him).”

this manner a person will become strong enough to abandon that which is more difficult. With regards to this a poet says: The nafs is like an infant, if you leave it, it will grow up with the love of suckling and if you wean it (accustom it to food other than it’s mother’s milk) it will abstain.

 

f. To Struggle against One’s Inclinations, Thoughts and Desires.

 

It is known that actions are originally thoughts which occur in the mind. These thoughts then turn into desires. Thereafter, these desires become firm intentions and, finally, these firm intentions are transformed into actions. From this you could conclude the importance of thoughts. If there is correctness of thoughts then desires and actions will be correct and, similarly, if there is corruption in thoughts then this will lead to evil desires and actions. According to the Hadith Shareef, Allah Ta’ala overlooks thoughts as long as these thoughts are not given practical expression. There are five stages in thoughts viz.

 

Hajis – This is a thought which in the beginning produces no reaction in the nafs.

 

Khaatir – If one fails to eliminate the hajjis thought and it establishes it’s presence in the nafs, but the nafs does not give it practical expression then this thought enters the Khaatir stage.

 

Hadithun nafs – In this stage the nafs ponders whether it should put into action or negate the thought which has established itself without giving preference to any side.

 

Ibne Qayyim Rahmatullah alaihi has advised us:

“Save yourself from establishing shaytaan in the house of your thoughts because he will ruin and destroy it to such an extent that it will be difficult to repair it. Shaytan will fling at you various types of destructing temptations and thoughts and he will intervene between you and beneficial thoughts.”

 

Hereunder follows some ways whereby thoughts could be rectified: Absolute knowledge that Allah Ta’ala is surely acquainted and aware of these thoughts. To realize that like our actions, our thoughts also have to be according to the Pleasure and Command of Allah Ta’ala. To realize that evil and bad thoughts produce nothing except regret, shame and disgrace and nothing is achieved by it. It is like a hungry person who thinks of food and drink which he cannot eat or drink. An ardent desire to remove and repulse these evil thoughts from the mind gradually, and to replace it by creating good thoughts like reflecting and pondering in the Blessings and Bounties of Allah Ta’ala on mankind. To think of the vices of the nafs and the shortcomings of A’maal and ways of rectifying it. To think of ways and means of calling people towards goodness. To ponder about Jannah, Jahannum, death and the horrors of the Aakhirah (Hereafter) and to think about ways of living an upright life. The following incident quoted by Maulana Siddique Ahmed Saheb Mudda Zilluhu illustrates how a student of Deen rectified his evil thoughts: It is narrrated that a student was studying in the city of Dehli. This student lived in a masjid. In that locality, a young lady was on her way to visit some of her relatives when, incidentally, a riot broke out. The young lady could not find any place of refuge except this masjid. The night had already set in. When the student saw this young lady he excused himself and ordered her to leave the masjid. He told her: “It is not appropriate for you to remain here because if the local people see you here then this will be a cause for my disgrace. They will remove me from the masjid and this will cause harm to my studies.” The young lady explaining her condition said: “A riot has broken out in the locality and if I leave the masjid I fear that I would be dishonored.” The student kept quiet and asked her to sit in one corner. Thereafter the student returned to his room and engaged himself in studying the whole night. While studying he continuously placed his finger tip on the flame of his lamp. The young lady carefully observed this. At the break of dawn the student told the young lady: “The riot has subsided and the road is safe. Let me take you to your home.” The young lady said: “I will not return home until you reveal to me the secret for repeatedly placing your finger tip on the flame of your lamp.” The student said: “You should not concern yourself with that.” Nevertheless, the young lady persisted with her request. The student finally said: “Shaytan repeatedly whispered into my heart and encouraged me to do evil with you. Hence I placed my finger tip on the flame and addressed myself thus: When you cannot bear the heat of the fire of this world then how will you ever bear the painful fire of Jahannum. Allah, through His Grace, protected me.” Hearing this the young lady returned to her home. She was the daughter of a wealthy person and she was about to be engaged to the son of another wealthy person. After this incident she refused the proposal and said: “I desire to marry a certain student who lives in such and such a masjid.” Her parents and relatives tried to convince her and many began entertaining bad thoughts about her. When she observed this she explained to them the whole incident and said: “I will only marry him because he has the fear of Allah in his heart and whoever fears Allah cannot cause harm to anyone.” Finally, she was married to that student and he became very wealthy. (Aadaabul Muta’allimeen: pg.23)

 

g. To Occupy One’s Time and to Utilize One’s Capabilities Correctly

 

Free time is amongst the major doors through which desires penetrate and sins enter. When a person has free time and he does not occupy it in the obedience of Allah Ta’ala then inevitably it will be used in the disobedience of Allah Ta’ala. Therefore, you will find most of those involved in this evil act complaining about free time which draws them into this sin. Beloved brothers! If you wish for salvation and freedom from this sin as well as others, then have the sincere desire to utilize your time in that which pleases Allah Ta’ala. Take advantage of seconds before hours pass by, occupy your time with obedience and worship and be cautious of free time because this is the root of all misfortunes. Similarly, have a sincere desire to utilize your capabilities correctly and benefit from them according to your ability. The person who feels that he has abundance of strength and power should, instead of directing it in the disobedience of Allah Ta’ala, use it in the obedience of Allah Ta’ala and in those avenues which will be beneficial to him in this world and the Akhirah (Hereafter). For example, he should engage himself in the acquisition of knowledge. in giving da’wah (calling) towards Allah Ta’ala (i.e. by participating in the work of Tableegh and Da’wah), in the spreading of good amongst mankind, by sitting in the company of the ‘Ulema etc. Nabi (SAW) said: “Take advantage of five things before five: of your youth before old age, of your health before illness, of your wealth before poverty, of your free-time before occupation and your life before death.” (Mustadrak lil Haakim)

 

i. To Occupy the Nafs when Desires Overwhelm a Person

 

When there is a persisting inclination to commit this bad habit, a person should make it compulsory upon himself to occupy his nafs in whatever way possible. For example, he should leave his home to visit one of his friends if the time is appropriate or he should mix with his family members. He should not remain alone. He should recite the Qur`an, make dhikr (remembrance of Allah) or he should do some prescribed physical exercises, etc. The important thing is that he should not be driven towards sin by these evil and bad thoughts.

 

j. The Recollection of Depression and Sorrow after the Fulfillment of Desires

 

A person drowned in desires should reflect upon his condition after he has fulfilled and satisfied his desire. He should ask himself: Have I found the pleasure and comfort I am searching for after fulfilling my desire? It is the Wisdom of Allah Ta’ala that whenever a Muslim fulfils a forbidden desire he feels unhappy, distressed, depressed, miserable and ashamed to such an extent that these feelings compel him to repent. Thus a sinner is afflicted with an unending sadness, misery and disgrace. Ibne Mubarak (RA) has said: “I have seen sins deadening the heart. It’s addiction causes disgrace. The abandoning of sins is life for the hearts. It is best for you to oppose your nafs.” Hence an intelligent person will sacrifice temporary pleasure which results in unending misery for eternal pleasure.

 

k. Dua`aa’

 

Why cannot dua`aa’ be a treatment? Dua`aa’ is a guaranteed way of seeking a cure from that Being who is Kind, Merciful, Forgiver of mistakes and errorsDua`aa’ means to implore and to beg before that Being Who is All Powerful and by whose command everything happens. Verily dua`aa’ is the most beneficial treatment and it has many benefits especially when a person earnestly makes those dua`aa’ which have been narrated from Nabi (SAW) by sincerely turning towards Allah Ta’ala and considering the times of acceptance. Allah Ta’ala says:

{Call Me and I will answer you} (Al-Ghafir 40: 80)

 

l. To Avoid Those Things Which Stimulate the Desires

 

Normally, the natural desire in man remains stable as long as it is not exposed to those scenes and sounds which incite it. When it finds a stimulating factor – whether sound or picture it is incited. At such an instance a person is forced to give practical expression to his desire. Now if a person does not have a wife in whom he can find tranquility, or such Iman which will contain this desire, then certainly, such a person will resort to this evil habit of masturbation… Hence, it is necessary for those youth who intend to safe-guard and cure themselves to abstain from places of temptation and evil and all other stimulating factors. Scantily clad, naked women should not be looked at. Theatres and playhouses should not be visited. Serialized and evil films should not be viewed. Shameless and morally deprived songs should not be heard. Shopping centers or schools set aside exclusively for women should be avoided. Co-educational institutions should not be attended. Institutions where non-mahram teachers are employed should also be avoided. Evil magazines and newspapers should not be allowed into the house and shameless novels should not be read. Telephonic conversions with strange women should be avoided. A strange woman should not be addressed in a loving and soft tone. As far as possible a person should strive to avoid even the means of fitnah (mischief). A person who circles around the border is likely to fall therein. Strange is the condition of that person who intentionally stimulates his desire and inflames his natural impulse after which he goes to the Ulema saying: “I want a solution!!!, I want a taweez (amulet)!!!”

 

n. To Sleep Only when it is Necessary & to Sleep in a state of Taharah (Cleanliness) and by Reading the Dua`aa’Before Sleeping

 

Many of those entrapped in this evil habit feel a strong urge to practice it when they retire and prepare to sleep especially after having eaten excessively. Therefore, it is necessary that such youth should not retire to bed unless there is a real need to sleep. They should sleep in the state of taharah on their right-hand sides. The dua`aa’ for sleeping which are reported from Nabi (SAW) should be read. Evil-thoughts should be dispelled by reading Subhaanallah, La ilaha illallah, Lahawla walaa qUwata illa billah, the recitation of the Qur`an or listening to it until sleep overpowers one. If possible it is better to sleep in the presence of another person. A person should meditate while lying on the bed that sleep is the sister of death. It is possible that he will not awake from this sleep for how many people went to sleep but never awoke there from.

 

o. Good, Pious Friendship

 

This is a very important part of the treatment. It applies in the beginning, middle and end, rather the treatment is incomplete without it. A person should spend everything within his ability to acquire good friendship. The importance of good, pious friendship cannot be over-emphasized. Good company is so blessed that the dog of Ashaabe Kahf (the Companions of the Cave) was honored because of their blessed company.

 

Generally, it is impossible for a person to live alone, without any friends who will walk along with him on the path of life. When a person is deprived of pious, sincere friends who will remind him about the truth then most certainly his evil friends will take him to an evil environment. Here he will live in a world which is filled with drugs, adultery, fornication, liquor, etc. Many youth who are involved in this evil learnt it because of bad company. Rasulullah (SAW) has explained to us the importance of good, pious, sincere friends.

Nabi (SAW) said: “A person is on the religion of his friend. Hence, you should see who you befriend.” (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Ahmad) In another Hadeeth it is reported that a pious companion is better than solitude. (Baihaqi)

 

p. To Consult A Physician / Hakim

 

Some youngsters need to consult a psychologist or a urologist (a doctor who is well versed in the sexual organs) so that they could be helped in the treatment. There are some medicines which dampen and calm the natural passion. Sometimes psychological factors also cause a person to practice this vile act. Therefore, a treatment should be sought by consulting those well-versed in this field.

 

q. Marriage

 

The most beneficial treatment of this vile habit is marriage. It is a recommended Shar’ee means to satisfy the natural desire.

Rasulullah (SAW) said: “O Assembly of youth! Those who are able to marry should marry because it lowers the gaze and protects the private parts. And those who are unable to marry should make fasting compulsory upon themselves because it breaks the desires.” Because of the indication of this hadith many `Ulema are of the opinion that marriage is Wajib (compulsory) upon the person who is capable and in need of marriage especially when there is a fear of fitnah (temptation). And what greater fitnah is there than a person performing that act morning and evening which Allah Ta’aala has forbidden. By marriage a person satisfies his natural desires upon which he is created. He attains tranquility, contentment of heart, a pleasant life and he frees himself from all such thoughts and dangers which invite him towards this vile act.

It should be clear that the matter demands an effort and sacrifice. Do not think that the treatment will be accomplished by taking a mere tablet or by drinking a mixture of medicine. Mujahadah (sacrifice and striving) coupled with tazkiyah-e-nafs (cleansing of the inner self) is necessary. As-salamu `alaykum.
I just wanted to ask what the Qur’an says about the slandering of innocent women in public and in private. I am fully aware that this is a grave offense to attack the honor and dignity of a Muslim and that in the sight of God it is an abhorrent act, but these days we are living in a society of ignorance where honor and blood are valueless.
What happens to a person who accuses a chaste woman of fornication and other illicit acts without providing the four witnesses as prescribed in Surat An-Nur? What makes people press false charges against good women when they know that these women would never commit such acts? How can a good Muslim person protect herself and other innocent victims of the same ordeal?

As-salamu `alaykum dear friend.
Thank you for your question.
The verses you are referring to from Surat An-Nur (24) mean:

*{And those who launch a charge against chaste [honorable] women, and produce not four witnesses [to support their allegations],- flog them with eighty stripes; and reject their evidence ever after: for such men are wicked transgressors [evil-doers].}* (An-Nur 24:4)

These verses were revealed when some hypocrites accused the Mother of the Believers `A’ishah, the wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him), of adultery.

`A’ishah was so hurt when she heard the accusation that she was crying day and night while praying to Allah Almighty to reveal her proof of innocence from heaven. Allah revealed her innocence in the same context of the above verse, by saying what means:

*{Lo! they who spread the slander are a gang among you. Deem it not a bad thing for you; nay, it is good for you. Unto every man of them (will be paid) that which he hath earned of the sin; and as for him among them who had the greater share therein, his will be an awful doom. Why did not the believers, men and women, when ye heard it, think good of their own folk, and say: It is a manifest untruth? Why did they not produce four witnesses? Since they produce not witnesses, they verily are liars in the sight of Allah. Had it not been for the grace of Allah and His mercy unto you in the world and the Hereafter an awful doom had overtaken you for that whereof ye murmured.}* (An-Nur 24:11-14)

Then, Allah Almighty blamed some of the believers for transferring the rumor around, without evidence. He asked them not to repeat this act ever, if they are true believers. The Qur’an says what means:

*{When ye welcomed it with your tongues, and uttered with your mouths that whereof ye had no knowledge, ye counted it a trifle. In the sight of Allah it is very great. Wherefor, when ye heard it, said ye not: It is not for us to speak of this. Glory be to Thee [O Allah]! This is awful calumny. Allah admonisheth you that ye repeat not the like thereof ever, if ye are [in truth] believers.}* (An-Nur 15-17)

Therefore, no woman (or man for that matter) should be accused of adultery or fornication unless there are four witnesses who have seen the act itself. In other words, for somebody to make this kind of accusation, the crime has to be done obviously in public. But even if one, two, or three people see such a thing, they have no right to accuse the person in public. Their duty, in this case, is to advise the persons involved in private and not to scandalize them.

The only exception from the above rule is a husband accusing his wife of adultery, while there are no other witnesses. In this case, Allah Almighty says what means:

*{As for those who accuse their wives but have no witnesses except themselves; let the testimony of one of them be four testimonies, [swearing] by Allah that he is of those who speak the truth; And yet a fifth, invoking the curse of Allah on him if he is of those who lie.}* (An-Nur 24:6-7)

But in this case, if the woman bears witness that he is lying, her testimony annuls (in the legal sense) his testimony. The Qur’anic verses continue saying what means:

*{And it shall avert the punishment from her if she bear witness before Allah four times that the thing he saith is indeed false, And a fifth [time] that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he speaketh truth.}* (An-Nur 24:8-9)

This, in fact, shows how Islam protects a woman’s honor, even if her husband is bad enough to try to accuse her falsely; Islam gives her the privilege of actually annulling his testimony.

Then, also according to the verses above, those who accuse chaste women of such acts and do not bring witnesses are supposed to be lashed and their testimony rejected ever after.

How to protect yourself from that? I pray that you are not tested with this kind of disaster, and if you are, I ask Allah to find you a way out that proves your innocence. As mentioned above, Lady `A’ishah herself could not protect herself from these accusations and they almost ruined her own marriage.

But if there is an authority (Islamic or otherwise), where you could accuse these people who accused you of defamation, then you could do that and you have all legal rights over them.

Wa`alaykumas-salamu warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Brother, thanks a lot for your question and care for the affairs of your follow Muslim brothers and sisters.

In the first place, we would like to highlight that all of us have a responsibility to the society and world we live in, and we are also responsible to make tomorrow a better day through the accuracy of information we spread or publish. That is why Islam forbids that we base our opinions on circulate rumors and half information.

Sheikh M. S. Al-Munajjid, a prominent Saudi Muslim lecturer and author, states:

It is well known that verifying news is something of high importance according toShari`ah, as Allah Almighty says, (O ye who believe! If an evil person brings you tidings, verify it, lest ye smite some folk in ignorance and afterward repent of what ye did) (Al-Hujurat 49: 6).

The Lawgiver issued a stern warning against passing on all news that one hears. It was narrated that Hafs ibn `Asim said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said: “It is enough lying for a man to speak of everything that he hears.” (Reported by Muslim)

It was also narrated from abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “It is enough sin for a man to speak of everything that he hears.” (As-Silsilah as-Sahihah, 2025)

Commenting on the above hadith, imam an-Nawawi said:

“Usually a person hears truth and lies, so if he speaks of everything that he hears, he is lying by telling of things that did not happen, and lying by speaking of something other than the way it happened; and he does not have to do that deliberately (in order to be regarded as telling lies.)”

It was narrated that al-Mughirah ibn Shu`bah said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah has forbidden you to disobey your mothers, to bury your daughters alive, to not pay the rights of others and to beg from others. And He dislikes gossip for you, asking too many questions, and wasting money.” (Reported by Al-Bukhari)

In his commentary on the previous hadith, al-Hafiz ibn Hajar said: With regard to the words “and He dislikes gossip for you”, there are certain points that should be clarified concerning the meaning of this hadith:

1. It indicates that it is disliked (makruh) to speak too much because it leads to mistakes.

2. It refers to narrating differences of opinions concerning religious matters, such as saying, “This one said such-and-such and that one said such-and-such.” The reason why this is disliked is that speaking of such matters may lead to mistakes. This applies especially to those who transmit such views without verifying them, merely imitating those whom they hear without exercising caution. This is supported by the Prophetic hadith that states, “It is enough sin for a man to speak of everything that he hears.” (Reported by Muslim).

It was reported that ibn Mas`ud (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say, “How bad it is for a man to keep saying, ‘They (i.e. other people) say…” (As-Silsilah as-Sahihah)

The above may explain why our righteous ancestors were keen to establish proof and were wary of rumors. `Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Beware of temptation (fitnah), for a word at the time of fitnah could be as devastating as the sword.”

The following are some of the examples that show to what extent spreading rumors is dangerous among the Ummah:

1. When the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) migrated from Makkah to Abyssinia, they were safe, but then a rumor spread that the kuffar (disbelievers) of the Quraysh in Makkah had become Muslims. So some of those Companions in Abyssinia left it and traveled to Makkah. To their amazement, they found that the report was not true, and they met with persecution at the hands of Quraysh. All of that happened because of rumors.

2- During the Battle of Uhud, when Mus`ab ibn `Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed, there was a rumor that the one who was killed was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so the army of Islam withdrew because of a rumor, and some of them fled to Madinah and some stopped fighting.

Proper Shari`ah Methodology in Dealing with Rumors

There are certain ways which help one deal with rumors, especially those related to news. Here are some of them:

1. Deliberation

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Deliberation is from Allah and haste is from the Satan.” (As-Silsilah as-Sahihah)

It is worth stressing here that the one who deliberates may meet some of his needs while the one who is hasty may slip.

2. Verifying News

Allah Almighty says, (O ye who believe! If an evil person brings you tidings, verify it, lest ye smite some folk in ignorance and afterward repent of what ye did) (Al-Hujurat 49: 6).

What is meant by verifying is to make strenuous effort to find out the facts behind a certain issue so as to establish whether this can be proven or not. Verifying also means to be sure of the truth of a certain report and its circumstances. Al-Hasan al-Basri said: The believer reserves judgment until the matter is proven.

In conclusion, we advise everyone to verify matters and not to rush to pass on news until they are sure that it is true, even if the news is good because if it becomes apparent that the one who passed it on is mistaken, he will lose credibility before the people, and anyone who bears a grudge towards him will use it against him.

If Islam is the best religion, why are many of the Muslims dishonest, unreliable, and involved in activities such as cheating, bribing, dealing in drugs, etc.?

 

 

 


1.   Media maligns Islam

  1. Islam is without doubt the best religion but the media is in the hands of the westerners who are afraid of Islam. The media is continuously broadcasting and printing information against Islam. They either provide misinformation about Islam, misquote Islam or project a point out of proportion, if any.
  2. When any bomb blasts take place anywhere, the first people to be accused without proof are invariably the Muslims. This appears as headlines in the news. Later, when they find that non-Muslims were responsible, it appears as an insignificant news’ item.
  3. If a 50 year old Muslim marries a 15 year old girl after taking her permission, it appears on the front page but when a 50 year old non-Muslim rapes a 6 year old girl, it may appear in the news in the inside pages as ‘Newsbriefs’. Everyday in America on an average 2,713 cases of rape take place but it doesn’t appear in the news, since it has become a way of life for the Americans.


2.   Black sheep in every community:

I am aware that there are some Muslims who are dishonest, unreliable, who cheat, etc. but the media projects this as though only Muslims are involved in such activities. There are black sheep in every community. I know Muslims who are alcoholics and who can drink most of the non-Muslims under the table.


3.   Muslims best as a whole:

Inspite of all the black sheep in the Muslim community, Muslims taken on the whole, yet form the best community in the world. We are the biggest community of tee-totallers as a whole, i.e. those who don’t imbibe alcohol. Collectively, we are a community which gives the maximum charity in the world. There is not a single person in the world who can even show a candle to the Muslims where modesty is concerned; where sobriety is concerned; where human values and ethics are concerned.


4.   Don’t judge a car by its driver:

If you want to judge how good is the latest model of the “Mercedes” car and a person who does not know how to drive sits at the steering wheel and bangs up the car, who will you blame? The car or the driver? But naturally, the driver. To analyze how good the car is, a person should not look at the driver but see the ability and features of the car. How fast is it, what is its average fuel consumption, what are the safety measures, etc. Even if I agree for the sake of argument that the Muslims are bad, we can’t judge Islam by its followers? If you want to judge how good Islam is then judge it according to its authentic sources, i.e. the Glorious Qur’an and the Sahih Hadith.


5.   Judge Islam by its best follower i.e. Prophet Mohammed (pbuh):

If you practically want to check how good a car is put an expert driver behind the steering wheel. Similarly the best and the most exemplary follower of Islam by whom you can check how good Islam is, is the last and final messenger of God, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Besides Muslims, there are several honest and unbiased non-Muslim historians who have acclaimed that prophet Muhammad was the best human being. According to Michael H. Hart who wrote the book, ‘The Hundred Most Influential Men in History’, the topmost position, i.e. the number one position goes to the beloved prophet of Islam, Muhammad (pbuh). There are several such examples of non-Muslims paying great tributes to the prophet, like Thomas Carlyle, La-Martine, etc.

16. Do not search for the faults of others. Do not have evil thoughts about anyone. Instead, look at your own faults and try to put them in order.

17. You should be very particular in offering your salaat in the proper manner, at the proper time and with great concentration.

18. Always occupy yourself in the remembrance of Allah either with your heart or tongue. Do not be neglectful in this regard at any time.

19. If you experience any satisfaction in taking the name of Allah and your heart feels happy over this, then express your gratitude to Allah.

20. Speak in a nice and humble way.

21. Set aside specific times for all your different tasks and abide strictly to these times.

22. Consider whatever regret, sorrow or loss you may experience to be from Allah. Do not be despondent. Instead, think that you will be rewarded for this.

23. Do not think about worldly matters, calculations, profits and losses, etc. all the time. Instead, think about Allah.

24. As far as possible, try to help and benefit others irrespective of whether it be in worldly affairs or Dini matters.

25. Do not eat and drink too little to the extent that you become weak and fall ill. Nor should you eat and drink too much to the extent that you feel lazy in carrying out the different acts of ‘ibadah.

26. Do not have any desire or greed for anything from anyone except Allah. Do not allow your mind to wander towards any place thinking that you will be able to gain certain benefit or profit from there.

27. Be restless in your quest for Allah.

28. Be grateful for the favours that are bestowed  upon you irrespective of whether they are plenty or few. Do not be depressed with poverty and destitution.

29. Overlook the faults and mistakes of those who are under your control.

30. If you learn of any fault of someone, conceal it. However, if the person plans to cause harm to someone else and you learn of it, then warn the other person beforehand.

31. Be in the services of guests, travelers, strangers, ‘ulama, and the pious servants of Allah.

32. Choose the company of the pious.

33. Fear Allah all the time.

34. Remember  death.

35.  Set aside a certain time daily wherein you should think about all your actions for that day. When you remember any good action, express gratitude. When you remember any evil action, repent.

36. Don’t ever speak a lie.

37. Don’t attend gatherings that are contrary to the Shari’ah.

38. Live with bashfulness, modesty and fornearance.

39. Do not be conceited by thinking to yourself that “I have a such-and-such qualities in me”

40. Continue making du’a to Allah to keep you steadfast on the straight path.

Everyone spends his life-span but a pertinent question is: who fulfils the right of living?

Animals bereft of wisdom and intelligence also pass their lives. However, a human being endowed with wisdom and intelligence spends a much more excellent and superior type of life. Similarly, a disbeliever  also passes the days of his life wandering in the darkness of misguidance and deviation. However, his life is quite different from that of a Muslim who lives a secure, smooth life in accordance with the guidelines of divine revelation. The day and night of a disbeliever is spent in spiritual darkness whereas a Muslim spends his day and night in spiritual light. Hence, a pertinent question arises: how should every Muslim spend his day and night so that his life could easily be distinguished from that of a disbeliever ?

Every Muslim should spend his day and night as follows:

1. Acquire knowledge of the Din according to your needs. You could acquire this knowledge either by reading a book or by asking the ‘ulama.

2. Abstain from all sins.

3. If you commit any sin, repent immediately.

4. Do not hold back in fulfilling anyone’s right. Do not cause anyone physical or verbal harm. Do not speak ill of anyone.

5. Do not have any love for wealth nor any desire for name or fame. Do not concern yourself with extravagant food and clothing.

6. If someone rebukes you for your mistake or error, do not try to justify your action. Admit your fault and repent.

7. Do not embark on a journey without any dire necessity. This is because many unconscious and unintended acts are committed while on a journey. Many good deeds are missed out, there is a shortcoming in the different forms of dhikr (remembrance of Allah), and you are unable to accomplish your tasks on time.

8. Do not laugh excessively nor talk excessively. You should take special precaution in not talking with ghayr mahrams (those with whom the observances of purdah is incumbent) in an informal way.

9. Do not go about repeating or mentioning an argument that may have taken place between two persons.

10. Always be mindful of the rules of the Shari’ah in everything you do. 

11. Do not display laziness in executing any act of ‘ibadah.

12. Try and spend most of your time in seclusion.

13. If you have to meet and converse with others, meet them with humility and do not display your greatness.

14. Associate very little with rulers and those who hold high positions.

15. Stay very far from the irreligious people.

Mahabbah dalam ertikata yang sebenarnya ialah kasih dan sayang di antara satu dengan lain semata-mata kerana Allah swt. Ini adalah sepertimana firman Allah swt dalam hadis Qudsi yang bermaksud:-

“Mahabbah itu wajib bagi mereka yang berkasih sayang di antara satu dengan lain keranaKu, pada jalanKu, dan orang yang menziarahi pada jalanKu dan mereka yang berkorban keranaKu, maka mereka-mereka inilah yang Aku kasih.”

Dalam satu riwayat lain pula Rasulullah saw pernah bersabda: “Ada di kalangan hamba, mereka ini bukan Nabi-Nabi, bukan pula golongan mati syahid, tetapi mereka ini disukai oleh para syuhada dan Nabi-Nabi. Mereka ini tinggi kedudukannya di sisi Allah swt.

Lantaran itu di kalangan sahabat-sahabat ada yang bertanya:
“Ya Rasulullah, siapakah mereka itu?
Maka jawab Rasulullah:-

“Mereka itu satu kaum yang berkasih sayang kerana Allah swt. Mereka melaksanakan perintah Allah swt. Mereka itu tidak ada sangkutan adik-beradik atau saudara mara. Dan bukan pula kerana harta, mereka berkasih sayang.”

Jadi dari riwayat di atas, dapatlah kita fahamkan tentang betapa pentingnya kita berkasih sayang di antara satu dengan lain tidak kerana yang lain tetapi adalah kerana Allah swt semata-mata. Inilah apa yang dikatakan kasih sayang yang hakiki yang merupakan ciri yang penting bagi membentuk masyarakat Islam.

Di sini ada diceritakan tentang kisah seorang wanita yang hidup di zaman Saidina Ali r.a. Masyhur wanita ini adalah kerana kasihnya kepada Saidina Ali sebab beliau adalah seorang yang beriman kepada Allah swt dan tidak pernah tamakkan harta dan sebagainya. Manakala Saidina Ali telah meninggal dunia, wanita itupun dipanggil oleh Muawiyah yang telah menggantikan Saidina Ali sebagai Khalifah ketika itu. Kata Muawiyah kepada wanita itu:-

“Sekiranya aku anugerahkan kepada engkau segala apa yang engkau mahu, dapatkah engkau kasihkan aku sebagaimana engkau kasihkan Ali?

Maka wanita itupun meminta seratus ekor unta untuk dipergunakan pada jalan Allah. Kata Muawiyah:-

“ Adakah dapat engkau kasihkan aku jika aku berikan engkau seratus ekor unta tersebut. Maka jawab wanita itu, “Ali tidak dapat memberikan aku walaupun sehelai bulu untapun tetapi aku tetap kasihkan Ali.”

Ini menunjukkan bahawa kasih kerana Allah itu tidak dapat ditukarganti dengan harta kekayaan. Sesungguhnya orang yang kasih dan cinta kepada Allah, muka mereka akan bersinar dan bercahaya. Jadi sekiranya seseorang itu tidak kasih kepada Allah dan RasulNya maka walaupun kita mempunyai pertalian darah sekalipun kita tidak akan melahirkan kasih sayang terhadapnya walaupun mereka itu keluarga kita sendiri.

Rasulullah saw pernah bersabda bahawa sekiranya ada tiga sifat ini kepada seseorang barulah dia dikira sebagai seorang yang beriman:-

(1) Orang yang kasihkan Allah dan RasulNya lebih dari yang lain,
(2) Orang yang kasihkan saudaranya sepertimana dia kasihkan dirinya sendiri,
(3) Orang yang benci untuk kembali kepada kufur sepertimana bencinya dicampak ke dalam api neraka.

Rasulullah saw pernah bersabda:

“Tiadalah dua orang yang berkasih sayang kerana Allah melainkan yang terlebih dikasihi Allah dari kedua mereka ialah orang yang terlebih kasih terhadap sahabatnya.”
(Diriwayatkan oleh Ibnu Hibban dan Hakim dari Anas).

Rasulullah saw juga pernah bersabda dalam sebuah hadis lain bahawa satu dari tujuh orang yang mendapat perlindungan Allah pada hari kiamat ketika matahari berhampiran dengan kepala di mana manusia tidak tertanggung menahan kepanasan ialah manusia yang bersaudara sehingga ia tidak berkumpul kecuali kerana Allah dan tidak berpisah kecuali kerana menunaikan tugas kerana Allah.

Rasulullah saw bersabda yang bermaksud:-

“Tujuh macam orang yang bakal dinaungi Allah di bawah naunganNya pada hari di mana tidak ada naungan kecuali naungan Allah; imam (pemimpin /ketua) yang adil, pemuda yag tetap taat beribadat kepada Allah swt, seorang yang hatinya selalu bergantung kepada masjid (iaitu memerhatikan waktu solat berjemaah di masjid), dua orang yang berkasih sayang semata-mata kerana Allah baik ketika bertemu atau berpisah, seorang lelaki yang diajak berzina oleh wanita bangsawan yang cantik tetapi ia menolak dengan berkata, “Aku takut kepada Allah”, seseorang yang bersedekah dirahsiakan sehingga tidak diketahui oleh kiri apa yang dilakukan oleh kanannya, seseorang yang berzikir ingat kepada Allah bersendirian sehingga bercucuran airmatanya.”

(Diriwayatkan oleh Bukhari & Muslim).

Rasulullah saw menjelaskan maksud dua orang yang bersaudara kerana Allah itu dengan satu cerita:-
“Seorang pemuda pergi menziarahi saudaranya, lalu Allah menyuruh Malaikat menantinya di jalan.

Malaikat: Anda ke mana?
Pemuda: Aku hendak mengunjungi saudara si anu.
Malaikat: Apa hajatmu kepadanya?
Pemuda: Tak ada.
Malaikat: Apakah kerana hubungan kerabat dengan dia?
Pemuda: Juga tidak.
Malaikat: Kerana ada sesuatu pemberian kepadanya?
Pemuda: Tidak sekali-kali.
Malaikat: Mengapa engkau mengunjunginya?
Pemuda: Aku mengasihinya kerana Allah.

Kemudian Malaikat menjelaskan , sebenarnya Allah mengutusku untuk menyampaikan kepadamu bahawa Allah kasih kepadamu disebabkan anda kasih kepadanya dan kamu berhak memiliki syurga.”
(Riwayat Muslim dan Abu Hurairah).

Satu lagi contoh yang disebutkan oleh ahli sejarah ialah kisah persaudaraan tentera-tentera Islam. Setelah tamat perang Yarmuk, seorang tentera Islam berjalan di tengah-tengah mayat para syuhada’ yang bergelimpangan untuk mempastikan samada hidup atau mati. Abu Jahm bin Huzaifah r.a. meriwayatkan: “Semasa peperangan Yarmuk bermula aku telah pergi mencari suadara sepupuku yang ketika itu berada di bahagian hadapan di dalam pertempuran itu. Aku juga telah membawa sedikit air bersamaku untuknya. Aku dapati bahawa beliau luka parah di dalam pertempuran yang hebat itu. Aku cuba menghampirinya untuk memberikan pertolongan dengan sedikit air yang ada padaku itu. Dengan tiba-tiba aku mendengar rintihan seorang tentera yang luka parah di sisinya. Apabila sepupuku memandang keadaan demikian lalu ia memalingkan mukanya dan mengisyaratkan kepadaku supaya membawa air itu dan memberikan kepada askar itu. Akupun pergilah kepada askar itu dengan membawa air tersebut bersama-samaku. Aku dapati dia ialah Hisham bin Abilah. Sebelum sempat aku sampai di sisinya , terdengar pula teriakan dari seorang yang terbaring tidak jauh dari tempat dia berada itu, Hisham juga telah mengisyaratkan kepadaku supaya membawa air itu kepada orang yang berteriak itu. Akhir sekali sebelum sempat aku dapat menghampirinya dia telah menghembuskan nafasnya yang terakhir. Kemudian aku berkejar kembali ke tempat Hisham, juga didapati beliau sudah meninggal dunia. Ketika itu juga dengan cepatnya aku pergi ke tempat saudara sepupuku berada, tetapi dia juga telah mengikuti kedua-dua mereka itu.”

Membina Persaudaraan Kerana Allah

 

 

Mampukah kita mengungkapkan kata-kata kasih dan sayang kerana Allah kepada saudara seIslam kita? Mampukah kita lahirkah sikap kasih dan sayang kerana Allah kepada saudara seagama dengan kita? Atau adakah kita hanya mementingkan diri sendiri tanpa menghiraukan kebajikan saudara-saudari seIslam kita yang mungkin di dalam kesusahan dan kesedihan? Ingatkah kita dengan ayat Allah…

“Sesungguhnya orang-orang yang beriman itu adalah bersaudara, maka damaikanlah di antara dua saudara kamu (yang bertelingkah) itu dan bertakwalah kepada Allah supaya kamu beroleh rahmat.” – Surah Al-Hujurat, 10
Betapa perlunya kita mengikat tali persaudaraan kerana Allah pada saat bersama-sama mengharungi liku-liku perjalanan dakwah untuk memperteguhkan ikatan antara sesama kita, sebagaimana telah dilakukan Rasulullah ketika dia mempersaudarakan antara Muhajirin dan Ansar. Mereka telah mengukir sejarah dengan contoh tauladan yang indah dan agung tentang cinta dan ikrar mengutamakan saudaranya daripada dirinya sendiri (ithar).

Pegang erat-erat tangan saudara kita di atas jalan dakwah dengan pegangan cinta, ikrar dan kasih sayang. Jangan lepaskan, terutama ketika terjadinya krisis dan kepayahan, atau ketika terjadinya fitnah dan ujian yang sedang bermaharajalela, atau ketika terjadinya berbagai peristiwa yang melanda umat Islam. Junjungan besar Nabi Muhammad saw telah menggalakkan dan mendorong supaya berbuat demikian sebagaimana sabdanya yang bermaksud:

“Orang mukmin dengan orang mukmin lainnya laksana bangunan yang sebahagiannya mendukung sebahagian yang lain”.

“Perumpamaan orang-orang mukmin dalam rasa cinta, kasih-sayang dan kemesraan mereka seperti badan yang satu apabila sebahagian dari anggotanya merasa sakit, maka seluruh anggotanya turut merasa sakit, seperti terkena penyakit susah hendak tidur atau demam”. (Hadis riwayat Bukhari).

“Seorang muslim adalah bersaudara dengan muslim yang lain, dia tidak menzalimi, tidak membiarkannya (mendapat bahaya). Sesiapa yang menolong saudaranya, Allah akan menolongnya. Sesiapa yang melepaskan saudaranya dari satu kesusahan, Allah melepaskannya dari satu kesusahan, bahkan berbagai kesusahan di hari kiamat. Sesiapa yang menutup rahsia (keaiban) seorang muslim, Allah menutupi keaibannya pada hari kiamat”.

Oleh kerana itu wahai saudara-saudaraku, kenalilah akan saudara-saudaramu, bersatupadulah, bekerjasamalah menggalakkan mekanisma budaya saling nasihat-menasihati dan tegur menegur secara terbuka, wujudkan suasana saling bertanggungjawab dan berkasih sayang dan jadilah hamba Allah yang bersaudara.

Tanyalah kepada diri kita, adakah lena tidur kita sekiranya saudara kita di dalam kelaparan, kesakitan, kesusahan, kedukaan atau kepayahan dalam hidup?

Wahai saudara seperjuanganku, lihatlah saudara-saudara kita jauh dan dekat, jiran tetangga seIslam, kaum kerabat jauh dan dekat, saudara-saudara kita di Palestin, di Lubnan, di Iraq dan di mana saja di muka bumi ini dan tanyalah kepada diri sendiri adakah keadaan kehidupan yang mereka lalui sama dengan kehidupan yang kita lalui?
